Smart micro-robots can “transform” with the surrounding environment: expected to be used for drug delivery in the human body

According to a recent report by the US Daily Science website, scientists from the EPFL and the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have jointly developed a miniature flexible robot that can change shape according to the surrounding environment. In the future, this robot can be swallowed by us to deliver the drug directly to the lesion tissue.

There are many microbes that are deformed by the environment, and the team of scientists led by EPFL's Selman Sakar and Bradley Nielsen of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich drew inspiration to design this highly flexible, A micro-intelligent robot with biocompatibility.

These devices can swim through fluids and change shape when needed, so they can traverse narrow blood vessels and complex systems without compromising speed or maneuverability. In addition, they are made of hydrogel nanocomposites containing magnetic nanoparticles, so they can be controlled by electromagnetic fields.

Manufacturing micro-robots faces many challenges, and scientists have solved these challenges with origami-based folding methods. Sakar explains: "Our robots have a special composition and structure that allows them to adapt to the characteristics of the fluid. For example, if they encounter changes in viscosity or osmotic concentration, they change their shape, maintaining speed and mobility. At the same time, it will not lose control of the direction of movement."

It is reported that these variants can be implemented by pre-programming to maximize performance without the use of bulky sensors or actuators. The robot can use electromagnetic field control or use fluid flow to pass itself through the cavity. Either way, they automatically deform into the most appropriate shape.

In addition to being more efficient, the manufacturing costs of these miniature soft robots are also reasonable. Currently, the research team is working to improve the ability of robots to swim through complex fluids, such as complex fluids in the human body.
